The Crias are Arriving !

Cria season has arrived!

This is always such an exciting time of year, it is also a very unpredictable time of year. The gestation time of an alpaca normally ranges between 340 days to 379 days, with the average being about 345 days. If an alpaca feels it isn't safe or the weather isn't right to give birth she can suspend the pregnancy, our longest here was just over a year, so that makes trying to plan anything just about impossible during cria season. Most of the females stay withi

WEANING THE CRIAS

The winter months are often pretty quiet on the ranch, a good chance to try and get caught up on some paperwork and fibrework. However there are still somethings that are very necessary to do, the main one in February was weaning the crias from their moms.

Crias are usually weaned around the age of 6 – 7 months old. By this time many of the moms are already limiting the amount of nursing the cria can do, mom knows if the cria needs milk or if it is lookin

This year we regularly attended the Shelburne, Meaford and Flesherton farmers markets. Weather permitting we would have two alpacas along with us, we now have 12 trained alpacas that

Summer Update

Another wonderful cria season “we had 3 dark fawn females" Zoom Zoom, Bonnie Blue and Halley, 1 white fluff ball female named Zemma and two silver grey tuxedo males, Sheridan and Khan. All have done very well and are growing so fast. Three of the crias arrived on a shearing weekend, so that slowed down the process a bit, but our helpers loved being able to watch the first steps of the crias.
Shearing in May this year was a bit more challenging thanks to Mother Nature's mood swings. One week

Summer Happenings

The saying “Time fly’s when you’re having fun!” is true. We have had a busy few months, but have had a lot of fun too.

The first two months we took yearlings, Yazhi and Strawberry Moon. The last two weeks we have taken Raven and her three week old cria Shasta. Everyone loves babies.

In July we went to Career Day at two of

We spent a couple of busy weekends shearing our herd, thankfully we finished before the weather got really warm. We really appreciate our family and friends who came to help us shear, our young

The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto

Thanks to Henry Mengers of Andre's Alpacas for allowing Cido and Bota to stay at the Royal, they are both very "personable" alpacas.
